Background

The Nightline is an immersive audio experience about the city at night composed from a vast collection of real-life anonymous voice messages, left between the hours of midnight and 6am. Throughout the past two years, director Roslyn Oades has engaged with Australia’s night community via overnight talkback radio, street posters, social media, word of mouth, and an array of night-industry services. A poor sleeper herself, she was curious to hear who else was awake in the wee the hours and what they were doing, thinking, remembering. The real-life anonymous voices featured in The Nightline include new parents, insomniacs, truck drivers, nurses, bar staff, students, gamers and all manner of nocturnal guardians, restless souls and shift workers (several of whom have become regular callers). Close to one thousand late-night anonymous voice messages have been collected in the making of this work thus far, via a dedicated Nightline message bank – which is still open and taking calls. The team behind The Nightline have been incredibly touched by the generosity and openness of our late-night callers, without whom this work would not be possible.

About the Artists

At the heart of The Nightline is a creative partnership between theatremaker Roslyn Oades and sound artist Bob Scott, in what is their fifth audio-theatre collaboration. In the spirit of creative non-fiction, The Nightline sees them recompose from a rich palette of found sounds, field recordings, phone messages, original composition and site responsive design to create a highly-crafted and immersive audio world. In the development and realisation of this concept, Roslyn and Bob have been blessed with an extraordinary team of collaborating artists: Fausto Brusamolino, Clare Britton and Katia Molino.
