The Silence Between Us: A Mother and Daughter's Conversation Through Suicide and Into Life is raw, courageous and devastatingly honest. A double memoir of mother and daughter Cécile and Oceane, it looks back nearly twenty years on Oceane’s suicide attempt at the age of eighteen. Compiled from contemporaneous diaries, letters, hospital records and psychiatric reports, the immediacy of the writing highlights the pain and confusion of the time and makes for confronting, necessary reading. Former Australian of the Year Pat McGorry joins Cécile and Oceane as they bravely break open the silence around suicide.

Participants

Cécile Barral is a psychotherapist in private practice in Ultimo and the Southern Highlands and a faculty member of ANZAP. Cecile uses therapeutic writing both for herself and clinically, and has a special interest in exploring this method of healing.

Oceane Campbell is Cécile Barral's third child and frequently wonders how Cécile survived living in a tent for a year with three children under three. Oceane and her wife have three children on their own, and Oceane is a proud and passionate midwife. She has published a number of midwifery articles and presented at many midwifery conferences. Before becoming a midwife, Oceane completed a psychology degree with honours and dabbled in less interesting jobs in corporate advisory and policy writing. Written with Cécile, The Silence Between Us is Oceane's first book.

Patrick McGorry is the Executive Director of Orygen, Professor of Youth Mental Health at the University of Melbourne, and a Founding Director of headspace in Australia. Patrick has published over 700 papers, edited eight books, and is Editor-in-Chief of Early Intervention in Psychiatry. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science. In 2010, he was named Australian of the Year.
