Sean Kelly describes The Game, his illuminating and deliciously readable take on Prime Minister Scott Morrison, as something akin to literary fiction, a critique of the flat character Morrison has assiduously created for the cameras, as conveyed to us through the pages of the press. Annika Smethurst’s The Accidental Prime Minister rigorously fills in the gaps in Morrison’s story. Both books help us understand more about the politician and the man behind the selfies.

Sean Kelly is a columnist for the Nine papers and a regular contributor to The Monthly. He was a political adviser to Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard. The Game: A Portrait of Scott Morrison is his first book.

Annika Smethurst is the state political editor at The Age newspaper in Melbourne. She is a double Walkley Award winner and has two Melbourne Quill Awards for political reporting. In 2019, Annika became the accidental poster woman for press freedom when her house was raided by the AFP over a story she wrote revealing a government plan to allow the Australian Signals Directorate to spy on Australians. In her 2020 essay, On Secrets, she explored the impact of the raids and examined the importance of press freedom. Her most recent book is The Accidental Prime Minster, a biography on Scott Morrison.

Annabel Crabb is one of Australia’s most popular political commentators, a Walkley Award-winning writer, and the host and creator of ABC shows Kitchen Cabinet, The House with Annabel Crabb, and Ms Represented. Her books include The Wife Drought, two cookbooks written with childhood friend Wendy Sharpe and, most recently, Well Hello, written with Leigh Sales, her co-host on the wildly popular podcast Chat 10 Looks 3.
