Three high profile lawyers discuss how they use their legal practice to advance important causes. David Barnden represented the students in Sharma v Minister for the Environment (2021) which found that Minister Ley had a duty of care to the next generation. Michael Bradley’s clients include survivors of sexual violence, Indian Australians locked out of Australia, and refugees imprisoned in Australian hotels. Terri Janke’s True Tracks framework of Indigenous cultural and intellectual property principles has been transformative for the protection of communities’ copyright and the prevention of cultural theft.

David Barnden is a Principal Lawyer at Equity Generation Lawyers, an incorporated legal practice specialising in climate change risk. David is involved in a number of public interest climate change cases in the Federal Court of Australia including representing 8 students from around Australia who brought a class action against the Federal Environment Minister to protect young people from the climate change impacts of the proposed Vickery Extension Coal Project.

Michael Bradley is a lawyer, writer, Managing Partner of Marque Lawyers, a commercial firm with a strong human rights interest, and a regular columnist for Crikey. His first book, Coniston, detailed the last massacre of Aboriginal people, and his second, System Failure, explores how our current justice system fails survivors of sexual assault.

Terri Janke is an author and Indigenous lawyer of Meriam and Wuthathi heritage. In 2000, she set up a law firm, Terri Janke and Company, focussing on Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property law and commercial law. Her most recent book is True Tracks: Respecting Indigenous knowledge and culture.
