The late Les Murray was our unofficial poet laureate – irascible, generous, thoughtful, refractory. His poetry was so influential it rewrote our vernacular. He moves us as he is effortlessly profound. In this special event, veteran of the Australian stage Peter Carroll performs a broad survey of Les’s verse, from his early work in the Sydney years to selections from the newly released posthumous Continuous Creation. Joseph Brodsky described Les as “quite simply, the one by whom the language lives.” In this presentation by another of our national treasures, the language lives on.

Participants

Peter Carroll’s distinguished career has spanned over one hundred productions and fifty years. He has worked with major theatre companies across Australia including, MTC, QTC, Belvoir, STCSA, Bell Shakespeare, and Opera Australia. Peter was a founding member of Nimrod Theatre Company, and has worked extensively with Sydney Theatre Company. Peter is the inaugural recipient of the Media Arts & Entertainment Alliance’s Lifetime Achievement Award and was awarded an AM for services to the theatre in 2021. He has extensive television and film credits and has won numerous theatre awards, including a Helpmann Award. Peter can currently be seen in GWB’s touring production of Girl from the North Country.

Peter Goldsworthy divides his working time between medicine and writing. His novels have sold over 400,000 copies in Australia alone, and his writing has been shortlisted and won major literary awards across a range of genres: poetry, short story, novels, theatre, and opera libretti. His most recent book is Minotaur.
