Geoff Goodfellow returns to Writers’ Week with a reading of his new verse novella, Blight Street, featuring Geoff and performers Roslyn Oades and Nic Darrigo.

Set in the northern suburbs of Adelaide, Blight Street is written in the language and idiom of the culture it portrays. Harrowing but tender, Blight Street draws on the vital themes that characterise Geoff’s writing: the working class struggle, the tragedy of addiction and the celebration of love.

The reading is followed by a short interview with Geoff, chaired by Rick Sarre.

Geoff Goodfellow is as tender as he is tough, as hard as he is soft - he is a walking contradiction. Throughout his thirty-seven year career as a writer, he has revealed a considerable capacity for listening and close observation. His first collection No Collars No Cuffs, first published in 1986, is now in its 9th printing. Eleven books have followed, most running into multiple print runs. His most recent books are a memoir Out of Copley Street: A Working Class boyhood, poetry collection Preparing for Business, and verse novella Blight Street.

Nic Darrigo is an actor who has appeared in many films, including Emmanuel, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival in 2019. He has most recently appeared in Warwick Thornton’s TV series Firebite for AMC.

Roslyn Oades is a voice artist, performer and award-winning theatremaker. Her critically acclaimed audio-theatre work, The Nightline, is part of this year’s Adelaide Festival Program. As a documentary theatremaker, her original works for stage include: Hello Goodbye & Happy Birthday (Melbourne Festival), I’m Your Man (Sydney Festival), Stories of Love & Hate (UTP/Sydney Theatre Co), and Creation Creation for Adelaide’s Windmill Theatre.

Rick Sarre is an Adjunct Professor of Law and Criminal Justice at the University of South Australia. He is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology, a previous Chair of the Academic Board of UniSA and a member of the University Council.
