Rising star James Morley grew up in Adelaide studying cello with Hilary Kleinig, Janis Laurs, and Rachel Johnston. He completed his Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium on scholarship in 2018 with Julian Smiles, and is currently studying under Howard Penny at the National Academy of Music. He has performed across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Asia as an orchestral cellist, chamber musician and soloist. ​

In this program of unaccompanied works by Bach and Britten, the remarkably talented 24-year-old demonstrates a sensitivity, finely honed expression and virtuosic control of his instrument far beyond his tender age.

James Morley plays the Ex-Robert Barrett cello made in 2004 by Rainer Beilharz, kindly on loan from Professor Mitra Guha, in memory of her late husband.

About James Morley

James Morley studied with Hilary Kleinig, Janis Laurs, and Rachel Johnston in Adelaide, Julian Smiles in Sydney, and Howard Penny in Melbourne. He has performed solo with Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Youth Orchestra, Sydney Youth Orchestra Wind Orchestra, and Ensemble Apex. A passionate chamber musician, James is a founding member of Rathdowne Quartet, performing at the likes of Melbourne Recital Centre and Sydney Opera House’s Utzon Room. In 2019 James was the cello Emerging Artist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and in 2020 was a finalist for the Freedman Fellowship Award.
